Our Lady of Sorrows: Remaining with Jesus When the Heart Is Heavy

There are moments when love cannot take away another person’s suffering. A parent sits beside a hospital bed. A spouse watches an illness progress. A family gathers after a death, struggling to find words.

On the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, we turn to Mary, whose love for Jesus brought her to the foot of His Cross. We remember her not because she was untouched by grief, but because she remained faithful in its midst.

Mary at the foot of the Cross

The Gospel for this memorial recounts Mary standing near the crucified Jesus. From the Cross, He entrusted His Mother to the beloved disciple and the disciple to her maternal care (John 19:25–27). The alternative Gospel recalls Simeon’s prophecy that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul (Luke 2:33–35). USCCB readings for September 15, 2026

These passages do not invite us to imagine that Mary felt no pain because she trusted God. They place sorrow and fidelity together.

For us, this is a needed reminder. Tears are not proof that faith has failed. Grief does not make our prayer less worthy of being heard. We can trust God while still feeling the weight of what we have lost.

Why we honor Our Lady of Sorrows

This memorial follows the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14. The two observances direct our attention to the same saving mystery: Christ’s sacrifice and His Mother’s faithful presence beside Him. Vatican News

Jesus alone is our Savior. Honoring Mary’s sorrows does not place her beside Him as another source of redemption. It helps us contemplate His Passion through the love of His Mother and learn from her response.

We do not celebrate pain for its own sake. We honor the love that remained faithful when suffering became unbearable.

A mother for those who grieve

Some sorrows are visible. Others remain hidden beneath ordinary routines. We may continue working, caring for our families, and answering messages while carrying a burden that few people know about.

Our Lady of Sorrows gives us a way to bring those burdens into prayer without pretending they are small.

We can ask her intercession for grieving parents, widows and widowers, families facing illness, and people struggling with loneliness. We can also pray for caregivers whose exhaustion is easily overlooked.

Seeking Mary’s help does not mean avoiding practical support. Prayer can accompany counseling, medical treatment, rest, and honest conversations with people we trust. Accepting help is not a failure of faith.

Learning the charity of presence

Mary’s place at the Cross challenges how we respond to suffering around us.

We often want to explain, reassure, or fix something immediately. Sometimes those efforts are helpful. At other times, a person needs us to listen without forcing a lesson from their pain.

We can offer a meal, make a phone call, help with an appointment, or sit quietly with someone who is grieving. We can remember that their need for support may continue long after others have returned to their routines.

Compassion does not require perfect words. It requires attention, patience, and a willingness to remain.

Praying the Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary lead us through Christ’s agony, scourging, crowning with thorns, carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion.

As we pray, we can entrust those who suffer to Jesus through Mary’s intercession. The purpose is not to compare their pain with His or tell them they should endure mistreatment. It is to draw near to the Lord who gave Himself for us and ask for the grace to respond with love.

If a full Rosary is difficult today, begin with one decade. Name the person you are praying for, then offer the prayers slowly and attentively.

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows

Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, we place our wounded hearts before you.

Pray for those mourning someone they love, for parents worried about their children, and for families facing illness or uncertainty. Remember those whose sorrow is hidden and those who feel forgotten.

Help us remain close to Jesus without hiding our tears. Teach us to receive support when we need it and to offer patient companionship to others.

Through your intercession, may we find strength for today and hope in the Resurrection of your Son.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
